So, how can we bring people together when members of our team are physically working miles apart?<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say, you have a bunch of independently talented employees who have individual creative processes and individual ways of solving problems.\u00a0 But since they are working remotely, the next thing you need to make sure of is that they also have a shared sense of purpose.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>The \u201cNew Norm\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>With the recent world\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">crisis, some companies had no other recourse but to enforce a work-from-home arrangement for their employees.\u00a0 Though everyone is waiting for the lockdown to be lifted and things to get back to normal, we cannot deny the possibility that this work arrangement will continue to be enforced by many organizations.\u00a0 This may be\u00a0 one of the after-effects of the pandemic \u2013 more and more employers may be drawn to establishing this new set-up.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Remote working is not entirely new to freelancers but for a lot of companies, this is an entirely different working arrangement. It will be one of the so-called \u201cnew norms\u201d that we are expecting after the <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 15px; background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/en\/\">world-wide pandemic<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">. Admittedly, this \u201cnew norm\u201d will create a very big difference for leaders, team members and the organization.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Culture by Design\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Creating a culture within an organization is a big challenge\u00a0to leaders.\u00a0 But an even greater<br \/>challenge is creating a culture among people that you don\u2019t see physically and\u00a0you don\u2019t regularly interact with. So as leaders, you are going to intentionally\u00a0define the culture of teams who are working remotely. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leaders cannot just build a culture based on however\u00a0people think, come together and choose to\u00a0interact with each other. One must remember that company culture is built by design, not by default.\u00a0 Culture is not tied to a\u00a0project.\u00a0It&#8217;s not just a piece of paper.\u00a0 It is the values that you inculcate into your team.\u00a0 And for\u00a0teams who are working from their homes,building company culture remotely is\u00a0incredibly challenging.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Leaders have active roles in building their culture.\u00a0 Every <a href=\"https:\/\/new.businessmaker-academy.com\/staging\/managing-virtual-assistants-telecommuters-off-site-workers-online-learning-session\/\">virtual meeting<\/a>, email exchange, disagreement or meme\u00a0adds to defining the culture of the moment.\u00a0 Now, here are some tips to build a culture for your telecommuting teams.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>First, create a set of values and articulate them.<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em><\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>These values\u00a0should define the way we think, speak and act.\u00a0 They shape the basis of the way we approach\u00a0what it is that we do. And in doing so, the team&#8217;s culture is defined.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>For instance, a few but very significant values that most\u00a0organizations believe in are trust, transparency and openness.\u00a0 If you want your remote team to move and\u00a0think around these values, you have to exemplify these things too.\u00a0 \u00a0So when you&#8217;re crafting emails, having video<br \/>meetings,\u00a0or just instant messaging with a fellow employee,\u00a0stop and\u00a0think if your actions reinforce\u00a0or deviate from the culture that you want\u00a0to build.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>When you want to build a culture of trust for telecommuting teams, do not send rapid fire emails for status updates.\u00a0 If you want transparency, make sure the team has access to your work.\u00a0 And if you want openness, be vulnerable in meetings\u00a0and be open about any problems you might have and ask for help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In other words, be sure to articulate and practice the values you have set for your company.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Second, validate the values.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The values should be evident in the way the members of the team think, speak and act. Observe how your people work.\u00a0 Find out their challenges while working in a remote set-up. Watch their process. Ask them of the things that they&#8217;re struggling with. Identify the rooms for improvement.\u00a0 It is the same thing as when building a brand.\u00a0A brand&#8217;s value should be able to stand the test of time.\u00a0 When\u00a0your team&#8217;s values and beliefs are done rightly, ultimately, they should also stand the test of time.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Third, define the norms and get buy-in.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Though managers have the responsibility to define the working arrangement of the team, it is equally critical that they get the ideas of the team and get their buy-in.\u00a0 \u00a0Leaders may ask the teams how they want to communicate.\u00a0 When will people be available? Come up with mutually agreeable service levels and turnaround times.\u00a0 Who is available to help with specific tasks?<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>While this is a good idea for any team, it&#8217;s especially important for remote teams to have a solidly defined set of norms. It will smooth team interactions, build trust among team members, and bake in accountability. All of which are important factors to overall team health and success. But of course, at the end of the day, it&#8217;s the manager&#8217;s job to guide the team in this process of creation.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Fourth, provide consistency and structure.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Another very important element in building a culture\u00a0is making sure that there are well-documented\u00a0procedures in place\u00a0and that they are being consistently followed.\u00a0This will give the members a solid basis for performance.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.officialgazette.gov.ph\/downloads\/2018\/12dec\/20181220-RA-11165-RRD.pdf\">Telecommuting<\/a> teams do not interact with each as often as people in the office, there is a bigger tendency for them to head off in different directions, unless there is a solid understanding upfront.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In creating culture for telecommuting teams, leaders must apply rules around procedures\u00a0and performance to everyone on the team equally.\u00a0If one member is held to a certain standard\u00a0and finds out that another gets away\u00a0with not following the procedures in full,\u00a0it will cause the leader\u2019s credibility to take a hit.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Make sure everyone on the team understands their role and that there\u2019s adequate definitions of the work\u00a0at hand.\u00a0 \u00a0The individual tasks\u00a0and deliverables are spelled out, thus, providing the team members\u00a0with actionable goals to meet,\u00a0reduces ambiguity, and sets common ground.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Summing it up<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Building a culture in a remote work environment\u00a0takes a bit of an extra effort.\u00a0But when done within intent,\u00a0you can see that your telecommuting team is just as cohesive\u00a0as if they were sitting in an office together.
